Panthers Find Late Goal Draw With UMKC
MILWAUKEE - There was another late equalizing goal from the Milwaukee men's soccer team, but this time around the night had a different final result, earning a 2-2 draw with UMKC Tuesday night at Engelmann Stadium.
Down a goal and their starting keeper, the Panthers (2-2-2) clawed their way back against the Kangaroos (2-0-3), with Jason Palitang Svensson's header in the 79th minute making it a new game.
"I feel like I am in the movie 'Groundhog Day'," UWM head coach Kris Kelderman said. "Here we go again, the same-old, same-old … the positive is that we keep giving ourselves opportunities to win games. That is the good sign. We are dangerous offensively – 27 shots to their 12 – you would like to think that would ensure you a victory, but it's not for us."
Milwaukee came up with the closest thing to a golden goal in the 20 minutes of overtime, as Nick Moon sent a shot cracking off the far post in the 108th minute of action.
"There are a couple of areas that we have to get batter at, but we are close," Kelderman said. "The guys know it. They are working hard and plugging away and hopefully we get there soon."
Trailing 2-1, the Panthers came close to tying the game earlier, only to see Evan Conway's diving header off a corner kick go just left of the post in the 70th.
Less than nine minutes later, Milwaukee got its equalizer with a fantastic header from Jason Svensson, lofted at the far post off a well-placed free kick from Vuk Latinovich at the 78:09 mark.
Freshman goalkeeper Greg Baxa, who came on in relief after Freddy Lorenzen left with injury in the 66th minute, saved the day with a terrific stop off a Diego Serfaty header in the 95th minute that would have put the game away for the Kangaroos.
"Talking with the guys, we've said we're having difficulty finishing on the offensive end, which means we need to get better on the defensive end," Kelderman said. "We can't give up goals. Unfortunately, we gave up two tonight. And no disrespect to UMKC, I thought they were mistakes that were preventable."
Milwaukee was first to strike in the 11th minute. Vuk Latinovich sent in a free kick from the right side, with Reid Stevenson blasting it into the back of the net on a spectacular volley.
Eric McWoods tied the match at the 33:24 mark, beating Lorenzen just inside the far post with his shot from the left wing to square it before intermission.
Sean Reynolds had a chance to regain the lead for the Panthers less than four minutes later in the 38th, but his blast went whizzing over the crossbar.
In the 52nd minute Lorenzen was challenged, making a brilliant save on a hard shot from the right wing from McWoods that maintained a 1-1 tie.
That tie stood until the 66th minute when Lorenzen left his line to try and clear a ball, but was met by hard collision with a UMKC forward. That caused the ball to deflect right to Loran's Lettner for the Kangaroos, who easily buried a shot into a wide open net. The collision forced Lorenzen to leave the game with an injury.
For the night, the Milwaukee Panthers outshot the Kangaroos 27-to-12, led by a team-high seven off the foot of Nick Moon. Each team was awarded seven corner kicks in the match. The night also saw 53 total fouls and five yellow cards.
Up next, the Panthers hit the road on Saturday against Belmont. Kickoff against the Bruins is scheduled for noon.
