Panthers Play Owls to 1-1 Draw
"This was a tough one," FIU Head Coach Munga Eketebi said. "We played well. We out-shot them 20-7; you can't ask for much more than that. I'm happy with the effort the guys put forth out there. We just have to punch in that second goal and win the game."
FIU's lone goal came off the foot of freshman Quentin Albrecht in the 11th minute of the match. Junior Joseph Dawkins assisted on the goal. After Dawkins pushed the ball past the keeper, Albrecht took possession parallel to the goal and sent a rocket to the far corner for his first-career score as a Panther.
"Quentin [Albrecht] is really everything we were hoping for and more," Eketebi said of his talented freshman. "He's going to be a big-timer here at FIU."
In the 24th minute, FAU countered with a Lukas Simons goal. He was assisted by Darnell King.
The Panthers had one of their best scoring opportunities in the 72nd minute when senior Lucas Di Croce sent a beautiful corner to Albrecht in front of the goal. Albrecht then headed the ball towards the top of the crossbar. At the last second, FAU's keeper got a hand on the ball and sent it over the goal. Immediately after, Di Croce sent another corner, this time to freshman Colby Burdette, who flicked a header towards the keeper. However, FAU's goalkeeper made a diving save to stop the FIU scoring threat.
The Panthers out-shot the Owls, 20-7. FIU sophomore keeper Eric Reyes had two saves compared to FAU's Jeremy Crumpton, who registered 11 saves.
"Overall, this was a very positive weekend for the FIU program," Reyes added.
The Panthers will take to the road for the first time in 2011 to compete at the Wolstein Classic in Columbus, Ohio. FIU faces No. 15 Ohio State on Friday at 8:30 ET and Penn State at Noon on Sunday. Fans can follow the action at OhioStateBuckeyes.com.
