Panthers Rally for Senior Day Win with Three Second Half Scores
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Faced with just their second two-goal deficit of the year, Ohio Dominican's men's soccer team appeared down for the count against visiting Walsh on Sunday afternoon, but three second half scores in a 10-minute stretch, sparked by junior Tommy Glenn (Pataskala, OH) lifted the Panthers to a 3-2 Senior Day victory.
Needing the regional win to keep its hopes alive for the NCAA Tournament, ODU felt the pressure of its back against the wall and came alive over the game's final 20 minutes for its largest come-from-behind win of the year. With the win, the Panthers run their overall record to 9-5-3 and home mark to 7-4-0, while the Cavaliers, the AMC regular season champions, fall to 14-4-0 and 5-2-0 on the road with their third straight setback.
Glenn got the comeback started at the 70:24 mark with a 11-yard, right wing shot to the far post off a cross through traffic in the box from classmate Andrew Edler (Hilliard, OH).
Shortly thereafter in the 76th minute, senior Felix Darko (Reynoldsburg, OH) found the equalizer, gathering a loose ball of a deflected shot by Glenn and sending it to the lower right 90 from the left wing, about nine yards out.
Less than five minutes later, Glenn capped off the scoring with his second goal of the afternoon as he beat the keeper with a straight-on look from 10 yards away off a cross by junior Colby Catlett (Hilliard, OH) for the go-ahead score and the first multi-goal game of his ODU career.
Playing in just his fourth home game since joining the team, senior Andrew Jones (Worthington, OH) posted five saves in the home finale to run his record to 4-1-1. Prior to the start of the game, the Panthers three senior student-athletes, Darko, Jones and Ryan Burton (Westerville, OH) were honored on the field by head coach Willy Merrick.
Up next, ODU will head to University Center, Michigan and the campus of Saginaw Valley State for the GLIAC Tournament, beginning this Thursday, Nov. 3. The second-seeded Panthers will take on third-seeded Northwood (Mich.) in the first semi-final at noon, while the host Cardinals battle fourth-seeded Tiffin in the second semi-final.
