Panthers shutout by Leathernecks 2-0
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Northern Iowa women's soccer team was back at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon for a matchup against Western Illinois. It was the second time of the young season that the Panthers had played WIU, losing to them 2-1 at the Green Bay Tournament.
Crossing winds were re-routing passes and making it difficult for either team to establish much rhythm on their attacks. The Leathernecks would get on the scoreboard in the 59th minute when junior forward Sarah Hall struck a crossing shot that found the net for WIU's first goal.
The Leathernecks would add to their score in the 70th minute when sophomore forward Skyler Jessop put back her penalty kick.
WIU outshot the Panthers 20 to 6. UNI goalkeeper Nicole Postel was busy, recording 14 saves and playing all 90 minutes while taking the loss. Leatherneck's goalkeeper Victoria Kappel recorded 4 saves in her winning effort.
WIU kicked 6 corners to the Panthers 1. Maddie Welch, Caitlyn Fuller, Maggie Riley, Larin Gordon, Amber Nieland and Sam Copley all recorded one shot attempt each.
The Panthers will be back in action on Sunday, September 15th at 1p.m. when South Dakota State will travel to Cedar Falls.
