Panthers Spread Offense In 4-0 Win vs. WIU
MACOMB, Ill. - Four different players found the back of the net to help the Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Western Illinois Friday afternoon at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
The Panthers (3-1-1) scored twice in each half to easily get past the Leathernecks (1-3-0). The victory keeps a strong road stretch going for UWM, which has now gone 7-0-1 in its last eight games away from home.
"I wouldn't say this was one of our better-played games," Milwaukee head coach Troy Fabiano said. "However, we got the win and that is what is important. After having trouble finding the back of the net last game, being able to put four in was nice."
Maria Stephans, Marissa Stovring, Anna Smalley and Maddie Tetzke all scored, with all but Stephans recording their first of the season. Two different goalies saw time and 23 different players saw time on the field.
"It was a good opportunity to get a lot of people on the field," Fabiano said. "Now, we need to recover and prepare for Sunday."
Stephans opened the scoring in the 15th minute, netting her second of the season to get things rolling. The goal came on the first shot of the day for the Panthers, who netted an efficient pair of goals in the first half despite recording just three shots in the frame.
Stovring made her presence known quickly, recording the first goal of her Panther career with a shot off the left post after receiving the ball from Lourdes Onwuemeka in the penalty area. Her tally came at the 42:06 mark and helped set up Milwaukee for a big second half. It also came less than eight minutes after subbing into the contest.
Smalley scored just after halftime, knocking in a deflection of her own shot at the 52:51 mark. Onwuemeka was busy setting up the action again on the final strike, finding Tetzke with a perfect cross at 69:12 to round out the scoring.
For the game, UWM owned just a 9-to-7 edge in shots, an impressive ratio of goals-to-shots attempted (4 of 9/.444). Corner kicks were 3-2 and fouls 10-7, both in favor of UWM.
Mallory Geurts started the contest and played 62:23, making a pair of early saves to keep it 0-0 at the time. She came off for Lauren Rice, who played the final 27:37 without being called on to make a save. Of the nine UWM shots, Smalley and Stovring led the way with two each.
The Panthers remain in the road and head to Iowa to play a regionally-ranked Drake squad Sunday. Kickoff time is set for 1 p.m. against the Bulldogs.
