Panthers Top Hatters on Burdette Golden Goal
DeLand, Fla. (September 22, 2012) – The FIU men’s soccer team (6-1-1) defeated the Stetson Hatters (1-5-1) on a golden goal by Colby Burdette in DeLand, Fla., on Saturday evening.
The goal by Burdette was the third of the season for the sophomore out of Boca Raton, Fla. He scored the golden goal in the 99th minute when he took a long pass from Lyle Lindquist at midfield and beat the Stetson keeper from 18 yards out to give the Panthers the victory.
“Going down a goal isn’t the way we want to start a game, but you can see that our players believe they can always score at any given time,” Head Coach Kenny Arena said. “Whenever we’re down a score, we don’t worry and keep pushing.”
After going down a goal at the half, junior Gonzalo Frechilla gave the Panthers new life in the 60th minute when he unloaded a shot from 18 yards out to the near post for the equalizer. Burdette and Icaro DeOliveira assisted on the goal.
The Panthers will have the week off before traveling to Columbia, S.C., and start Conference USA action against South Carolina on Sat., Sept. 29 at 7:00 p.m.
