Panthers Unable To Hold Halftime Lead at ISU
NORMAL, Ill. - Sophomore Sydney Senn put the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team up a goal early and junior Paige Lincicum made a career-high 10 saves but Illinois State University responded with a big second half to claim a 3-1 victory Friday night at Adelaide Street Field.
The Panthers (1-1-0) scored in the 16th minute and held that advantage over the Redbirds (1-2-0) until early in the second half.
"I felt like we played very well in the first half," head coach Troy Fabiano said. "The energy was there and we took advantage of the chances we had. In the second half, we let them get behind us and did not transition well. It was unfortunate, but it was a game of two halves for us."
Illinois State, a team coming off a second-round appearance in the NCAA Tournament a season ago, equalized in the 50th minute and went ahead in the 62nd.
Senn opened the scoring at the 15:57 mark, heading in a corner kick off the foot of junior Taylor Swittel. Despite being outshot, 10-5, in the first 45 minutes, Milwaukee was in control and playing with the lead.
Lincicum was outstanding in the first half, piling up seven saves alone before intermission, including several of the highlight variety. Her full-out dive in the 34th minute prevented a sure goal and her stop with just over three minutes remaining in the first was just as impressive.
In the second, the Redbirds struck first. Brooke Ksiazek cleaned up a corner kick to make it a new game at 1-1. Lincicum had to come off her line to prevent a scoring chance after a long ball in the 62nd minute, but Brianne Richards still found a way to convert and shift the momentum. ISU would add an insurance tally in the 77th minute.
Final stats saw the Redbirds with a 16-7 advantage in shots and a 13-4 edge in shots on goal. The home team forced eight of the 11 corner kicks in the match and was whistled for just one of the 14 fouls on the night.
Senn paced the UWM offense with the goal as well as three shots, two of which were on frame.
The Panthers remain on the road for a day off before heading to Indianapolis for a Sunday matinee at Butler. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. CST.
