Patriot Men’s Soccer clipped by Hawks
MURFREESBORO, NC – A pair of goals in the 25th-minute and 58th-minute from Terell Williamson sparked Chowan University to a 3-0 non-conference win over Francis Marion University, Wednesday night (Sept. 14) in men's soccer action.
Francis Marion (1-3-1) will return home to open-up Peach Belt Conference play against unbeaten University of Montevallo on Saturday (Sept. 17) at 4 p.m. on Hartzler Field.
The victory pushes Chowan's record to 3-2-0 on the season. Williamson finished with six shots in the contest – four of them finding their way on-net for the Hawks.
Francis Marion fired the first shot of the game at the 10:13 mark as freshman Lee Northfield tried to beat Chowan’s goalkeeper Carlos Ramirez.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Mannes made a pair of great saves for the Patriots midway through the first-half as he stopped Paul Migliarina in the 32nd-minute and then denied Williamson in the 33rd-minute.
The Hawks would take a 1-0 lead into the locker room at the end of the first-half thanks to Williamson’s tally.
The Patriots looked to even the match in the 51st-minute as junior Jevon Williams tried to beat Ramirez but was denied. Following a pair of FMU shots, Williamson would tally his second goal of the match after sprinting in on a breakaway to beat Mannes.
Chowan closed out the scoring with a goal in the 67th-minute by Lee Wattam.
FMU had a pair of late chances to get onto the scoreboard as junior Andrew Kephart took a penalty kick in the 87th-minute, followed by a shot in the 90th-minute off of the foot of Northfield.
The Hawks outshot the Patriots 18-8 and 8-4 in shots on goal. Chowan was issued six yellow cards in the match while Francis Marion was issued one.
Four separate Patriots tallied a single shot on goal in the match.
Mannes (0-1-1) suffered the loss in goal for Francis Marion while making five saves. Ramirez earned the win in net for the Hawks, while making four saves.
