Patriot trio scores in win at SWU
CENTRAL, SC – Sophomore Damien Tergella, senior Harrison Smith, and junior Levin Sandmann all scored first-half goals to pace Francis Marion University to a 3-1 victory over Southern Wesleyan University in non-conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday evening (Oct. 4).
The Patriots move to 6-3-0 on the campaign while the Warriors fall to 4-5-1. The next match for Francis Marion will be on the road on Saturday as they take on 13th-ranked Young Harris College at 5 p.m. The next home event for the Patriots will be Oct. 14 against Lenoir-Rhyne University at 7 p.m.
FMU had five shots within the first 15 minutes of the contest, but none of them found the mark. After a pass from junior Oliver Drakenhammer, Tergella put the first goal on the board just seconds later at the 15:16 mark. It marked the second consecutive match Tergella has scored.
Smith doubled the score in the 20th minute after a foul on Southern Wesleyan, tallying his second goal of the season.
After several saves by FMU freshman goalkeeper Raul Guillamon Bejar kept the margin at 2-0, the Patriots added an insurance score when Sandmann put the ball into the back of the net with eight minutes left before intermission. This gives Sandmann seven goals on the season, good for third place in the Peach Belt Conference.
The Warriors tallied their lone goal in the last minute of the contest when Jesus Sosa bent his own corner kick past Guillamon Bejar at the 89:19 mark.
Guillamon Bejar finished the game with eight saves, while Southern Wesleyan’s junior goalkeeper Miguel Uribe had seven.
The Patriots took nine corner kicks in the game compared to SWU’s five, while the Warriors held a 25-20 edge in shots. Sandmann led FMU with five shots, while junior Gaspard Mianne had four.
