Patriots blank Falcons 2-0 for PBC win
FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore Levin Sandmann scored a rebound goal in the 11th minute and Francis Marion University added a second-half score en route to a 2-0 blanking of the University of Montevallo, Saturday afternoon (Sept. 26) in Peach Belt Conference men’s soccer action.
Francis Marion ups its overall mark to 5-2-1 – with all the victories coming by shutout – and evens its PBC record at 1-1-0. FMU will play host to local PBC rival UNC Pembroke on Wednesday at 7 p.m. on Hartzler Field.
Francis Marion outshot the Falcons 24-11 despite Montevallo holding a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Sandmann tapped in the rebound of a shot by senior Sven Ricke at the 10:21 mark. The sequence began with Anton Jonsson on the right side and he fed a pass to Ricke, who’s shot in the box was stopped but not corralled by Montevallo goalkeeper Yannic Horn. The sphere bounced to the wide-open Sandmann, who converted the second opportunity.
It was the fourth score of the year for Sandmann, while Ricke picked up his conference-leading seventh assist.
Ricke scored off a pass from Jonsson in the 59th minute, but the goal was disallowed due to an offside call. FMU had a second score disallowed in the 78th minute, again owing to an offside call.
The margin did finally grow to 2-0 at the 59:38 mark when a cross from Ricke was not cleared by a Montevallo defender and the ball fell at the feet of sophomore Harrison Smith, who knocked home an 18-yard attempt. It was also Smith’s fourth tally of the 2015 campaign.
FMU freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Mannes recorded four saves en route to his fifth clean sheet of his young career. The outing lowered his goals against average to 0.73. The backline of senior David Sheridan, junior Peter Beniseau, sophomore Gaspard Mianne, and freshman Niklas Sundell patrolled the area in front of Mannes and helped allow only five shots on goal.
Freshman Sindre Traaseth helped the Patriot cause by clearing a Montevallo shot by Shawn Healy off the goal line in the 20th minute with the margin still being 1-0.
Horn finished the match with 11 saves as the Falcons drop to 2-5-0 and 0-2-0.
