Patriots Clipped by Eagles
STATESBORO, GA (Oct. 10, 2013) – The Francis Marion University women's soccer team dropped a 5-0 road decision to Georgia Southern University on Thursday night in Statesboro, Ga.
The Patriots return home Sunday, Oct. 13 to face Davidson College. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m. on Hartzler Field.
Junior Elizabeth Asare paced the Patriot offense with three shots on goal. Sophomore net-minder Taylor O’Berry started the match in goal and made three saves. Freshman goalkeeper Kim Newton also played 19 minutes and registered a save.
Georgia Southern (3-7-2) did most of its damage in the first half, with four goals coming in the opening frame. Sydnie Van Curen opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a goal off a pass from Nora El-Shami. The Eagles would add their second goal in the 33rd minute when Cori Dulmage scored from about eight yards out.
GSU would strike just a few minutes later off the back heel of Taylor Burns, who collected a rebound off a free kick, and put the Eagles up 3-0 through 40 minutes of play. Stephanie Gratto added the fourth goal of the match in the 45th minute when she collected a cross from El-Shami and put the ball in the back of the net.
The Eagles would add their final goal in the second half off the foot of Melinda Lukas in the 70th minute. GSU goalkeeper Molly Williams made six saves en route to earning the shutout victory.
Georgia Southern held a 20-9 advantage on shots while each team took one corner kick.
