Patriots drop 1-0 heartbreaker to Terriers
FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University equaled its best defensive outing of the season, allowing a lone first-half score, but that tally proved decisive as Wofford College defeated the Patriots 1-0, Tuesday night (Sept. 15) in non-conference women’s soccer action.
Francis Marion (1-8-0) will travel to Lexington, Va., this weekend for a pair of matches. The Patriots will face Hampton University on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and then battle host VMI on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The next home match for FMU will be Oct. 3 when Longwood University comes to Hartzler Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Wofford (1-2-2) scored its goal at the 29:51 mark when Lucy Etro converted a cross from Brooke Leftwich.
Senior right back Janise Finney registered FMU’s only shot, an attempt that went high over the crossbar in the 37th minute.
Patriot senior goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry continued her assault on the FMU record book. She recorded 12 saves on Tuesday – one shy of her career high – and improved upon her school career records for saves (364), matches played in goal (61), and minutes played in goal (5,223).
The match featured only three corner kicks and four fouls, all committed by the Terriers. It was the first time in its 21-year history, Francis Marion was not whistled for a foul.
Three Wofford goalkeepers played and combined for the shutout.
The Patriot backline of Finney, Kristyn Leung, Kylie Allen, and Arianna Pierner limited the Terriers to very few serious chances outside of the scoring sequence.
