Patriots drop 2-1 decision in final minutes
ROCK HILL, SC – A late second-half goal by Winthrop University helped the Eagles top Francis Marion University 2-1 in women’s soccer action on the road Thursday night (Aug. 27).
Francis Marion (1-2-0) will return to the pitch on Sunday to host UNC Asheville on Hartzler Field at 2 p.m. The Patriots will then travel to Georgia Southern University on Sept. 4.
“I am very proud of the girls’ performance tonight. Our midfield did a much better job of staying tight and not allowing them to turn and run at us,” Francis Marion head coach Lindsey Morgan said. “The investment these girls continue to show each day is great and I'm very excited to prepare for Sunday.”
Junior Kelly Anthony tied the score 1-1 for Francis Marion just four-and-a-half minutes into the second half on a free kick.
The Patriots had two shots in the contest with the other shot coming from Helena Moore just before halftime. Moore was making her first collegiate appearance in her hometown.
The Eagles posted 23 shots in the match, with 10 on goal.
Francis Marion senior goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry stopped eight of the shots put on goal by Winthrop.
Winthrop’s JoJo Taylor scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute on an assist from Samantha Prytulak. Emily Crick netted the first goal of the match less than three minutes into the second half on a pass from Courtney McLeod.
The match was scoreless at halftime.
