Patriots shutout S.C. State 2-0
ORANGEBURG, SC – Sophomore forward Helena Moore scored in the 65th minute and the Francis Marion University defense make that lone score stand up as the Patriots blanked South Carolina State University 1-0, Friday night (Oct. 16) in women’s college soccer action.
The Patriots pitch their first shutout of 2015 and improve to 3-13-0. FMU returns home to host USC Upstate on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. on Hartzler Field.
Moore settled the ball and after a long run slotted a shot past Bulldog goalkeeper Haley Austin and into the back corner at the 64:29 mark. It was the Rock Hill product’s fourth score of the season.
Only three minutes prior to the goal, FMU senior Shauna Griffin had forced Austin to make a finger-tip save that kept the match scoreless.
Moore’s score was Francis Marion’s final shot of the match. FMU senior goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry saved a Bulldog attempt to equalize in the 67th minute. For the match, S.C. State outshot the Patriots 11-6 and led 3-2 in corner kicks.
The match featured two of the most active goalkeepers in NCAA Division I. O’Berry stands second among active keepers with 408 saves, while Austin is 15th with 305. Those totals include seven for O’Berry from Friday night and four for Austin.
FMU junior Kelly Anthony paced the Patriot squad with four shots, three of which were on goal.
The Patriot backline of seniors Janise Finney, Kristyn Leung, Kylie Allen, and Arianna Pierner helped O’Berry hold the Bulldogs without a shot over the final 22 minutes.
