Patriots swamp Pirates 14-0 in season finale
FLORENCE, SC – Senior defender Arianna Pierner tallied four goals and an assist in her final collegiate contest to lead Francis Marion University to a 14-0 win over Hampton University, Sunday morning (Nov. 1) in the third-place match of the 2015 NCAA Division I Independents Women’s Soccer Tournament.
The Patriots end their season 4-15-0 surpassing the win total of last season.
Delaware State University defeated S.C. State University 1-0 in the championship match thanks to a 90th-minute penalty kick by Danielle Valente.
Pierner’s nine total points equals the sixth-highest single-match total in Patriot history. That total was also equaled on Sunday by senior teammate Shauna Griffin who tallied three goals and three assists. It marked the fourth time in team history that two teammates had recorded hat tricks in the same match, but was the first such occurrence in eight seasons.
Senior goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry, who ends her career as the Patriot career leader in saves (423), matches played in goal (71), and minutes played in goal (5,904), played the first 45 minutes in goal and the final 45 minutes as a field player. During the second stanza, she recorded a pair of goals and two assists.
Junior Kelly Anthony registered one goal and three assists, while junior Tori Whigham added a goal and two assists. Senior defender Kristyn Leung, junior midfielder Breanna Henderson, and junior forward Kira Davis accounted for the other Francis Marion goals. Senior defender Janise Finney and freshman midfielder Breanna Crenshaw recorded one assist apiece.
Francis Marion produced a school-record 49 shots, bettering the old mark of 43 set in 2002 against St. Andrews Presbyterian College. Hampton ended the match with six shots. FMU also earned all six of the match’s corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Casey Murakami played the final half for the Patriots and made two saves. Hampton played a pair of keepers with Courtney James making nine stops and Michelle Jones recording four saves.
Both O’Berry and senior defender Kylie Allen were named to the All-Tournament Team. Delaware State’s Ayanna Smith was selected as the Tournament MVP, while the remainder of the All-Tournament squad consisted of Valente (DSU), McKenzie Miller (DSU), Tere' Crawford (DSU), Valery Fernandez-Davila (SCSU), Haley Austin (SCSU), Alexandra Kidd (SCSU), James (HU), and LaTrice Montgomery (HU).
Anthony wasted little time in giving FMU a 1-0 advantage as she took a service from Griffin and scored on a 12-yard attempt in the fifth minute. Pierner scored the first of her four goals at the 19:24 mark, and was followed by scores from Griffin in the 29th minute, Davis in the 32nd minute, and Pierner again in the 35th minute. Francis Marion led 5-0 at intermission.
O’Berry and Whigham both found the back of the net within the opening three minutes of the second half. Pierner’s other scores came on a long free kick in the 73rd minute and a 16-yard shot in the 86th minute.
