Penguins Stun Panthers In Double OT
Youngstown, Ohio - Kathy Baquero scored the game-winner just 55 seconds into the second overtime as Youngstown State University pulled out a 3-2 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team Saturday afternoon at Farmers National Bank Field.
Despite dominating the run of play throughout the game, Milwaukee (4-7, 1-1 Horizon) just couldn't hold on to a pair of leads as YSU (5-4-2, 1-0-1) squeaked out the win.
UWM outshot Youngstown State 16-12 on the day, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.
The Penguins now remain undefeated at home with a 4-0-2 mark thus far.
"Today's result is very disappointing," Milwaukee head coach Greg Henschel said. "Conceding the lead twice was a failure on our part to execute within our philosophies, especially in some key moments. We will work hard to execute with great consistency for our upcoming matches."
UWM was able to get on the board first after Morgan LaPlant had an incredible individual effort for the first goal of the game midway through the first half. The senior collected the ball near midfield and then took off toward goal. LaPlant dribbled through seemingly half the YSU defense before shooting just inside the 18-yard-box and completely fooling the Penguin keeper for her fourth goal of the year.
Shortly after halftime, the Penguins were able to tie it up as Chelsea Haney just beat Milwaukee keeper Paige Lincicum to a 50-50 ball, just getting a foot on it to bring the score level at 1-1 in the 56th minute.
UWM came right back, though, on Krissy Dorre's fifth of the season. The senior forward took a feed from Kelly Lewers inside the box and fought off a defender, just getting off the shot before getting dragged down to beat the keeper far post and make it 2-1 Panthers.
That goal was the 25th of Dorre's career, moving her into a tie for fourth all-time in UWM history.
But the Penguins were able to knot the game back up again as a fluke ball was launched into the box from the wing and somehow floated over everybody and into the back of the net in the 75th minute.
Milwaukee continued to push back, dominating the run of play the rest of the way. Vienne Behnke took a crack in the 79th minute, but the shot went just high. Lewers gave it a go in the 84th but had her shot saved by the YSU keeper.
In the first overtime period, the Panthers continued to dominate possession. Lewers took a feed at the near post from LaPlant but her one-timed volley went just wide of the frame.
A few minutes later, UWM earned a free kick just outside the box. Setting up a quick restart, Dorre played the ball to a wide-open LaPlant inside the box but her shot went right to the Penguin keeper.
Youngstown State made the most of their only chance during either overtime when Baquero found an opening inside the box after a failed clearance by the Panther defense to score the game winner.
Milwaukee now returns home for their final non-conference match of the season, taking on Illinois State Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Engelmann Stadium.
