Penn Blanks Stony Brook, 2-0
PHILADELPHIA - New year, new field, new feel for Penn's men's soccer team as the Quakers blanked Stony Brook, 2-0, in their season opener on Friday night.
Playing the program's first-ever match at Penn Park while Rhodes Field finishes up renovations, the Red and Blue put forth a quicker effort on the offensive side of the ball while shoring up a defense which at times struggled in 2013 for a positive result to begin the new campaign.
Louis Schott netted Penn's first goal of 2013 in the 44th minute, connecting flush on a strike at the top of the box which went straight to the upper 90 for what proved to be the game-winner.
Schott’s score gave Penn a lead at halftime for the first time since its 7-2 win over Rider on Sept. 23 of last season. It was a well-deserved advantage at the break as the Quakers held an edge in shots, 11-4. Penn’s veteran forward duo of Stephen Baker and Duke Lacroix combined for eight of Penn’s shots in the first half, heaping copious amounts of pressure on Stony Brook’s keeper, Jason Orban. Penn scoring play came off a set piece, capping the sixth corner taken in the first half by the Quakers. At the end of 90’, the Quakers earned nine corners to just three for the Sea Wolves.
Seven minutes into the second half, Jason deFaria headed in his first career goal, flicking in a free kick from Austin Kinn to give the Quakers some breathing room and giving Penn two goals of set pieces in the match.
Austin's twin brother Tyler Kinn made the pair of goals stand up with five second-half saves for his first career clean sheet. Kinn now has four wins in eight career starts in goal for the Quakers, and is 3-1 in matches played at home.
The shutout for the Quakers is the first in 26 matches for the Quakers – also against Stony Brook at home on Sept. 24, 2011. Kinn and Penn’s defensive group earned the clean sheet over the match’s final minutes, coming up with three saves in the final five minutes of play and denying a Stony Brook corner.
The Red and Blue will cap the 2013 Sheraton University City Penn Soccer Classic with a match against Sacred Heart on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 2:30 p.m. at Penn Park. The Pioneers defeated Drexel, 2-1, on Friday night in Penn Soccer Classic match, making Sunday’s tilt for the championship.
