Penn Edged by #11 Brown, 1-0
PHILADELPHIA - Penn knew going into its match with No. 11 Brown that goals would be at a premium. The 11th-ranked Bears entered the weekend with just seven goals conceded, and Penn could not add an eighth as the Quakers were downed by Brown, 1-0.
Brown gave itself a lead just 3:59 into the match when Ben Maurey finished a quick passing play between Bobby Belair and Kevin Gavey. Moving down the left flank, Gavey funneled the ball to Belair, whose shot was deflected to an open Maurey who one-touched the ball to the top left corner.
The quick deficit did not deter the Quakers, who mounted six shots in the first half. Five of those shots were on target, four from the feet of Duke Lacroix. Penn’s striker finished the match with a team-high seven shots, forcing Sam Kernan-Schloss to make five saves.
Max Kurtzman was equally as busy in goal for the Quakers, making eight saves over the course of the match. Six of those saves came in the first 45’, providing Penn with a chance to climb back into the game.
In the second half, Penn was on the defensive for the opening portion, denying Brown on six shots – two saved by Kurtzman and four forced high or wide. Lacroix had his final look in the 55’, again stopped by Kernan-Schloss. Stephen Baker had a run in the 86’, getting a good look which was denied by the keeper. Penn had one final opportunity to tie the match on a corner kick in the final 20 seconds, but Travis Cantrell’s serviced was punched away by Kernan-Schloss and time ran out.
The Quakers are scheduled to host Penn State on October 31 at 7 p.m. at Rhodes Field. Please stay tuned to PennAthletics.com for any updates due to the forecasted storm hitting the Philadelphia region early in the week.
