Penn Takes Down Temple, 3-0
AMBLER, Pa. – If you blinked you may have missed Penn’s three-goal spurt to seal a road win at Temple on Sunday afternoon as the Quakers scored three times in 5:27 to stun the hosts and improve to 3-3-0 for 2014.
Three different players scored for the Quakers in the decisive stretch, beginning with Duke Lacroix in the 63rd minute. The senior finished off an Alec Neumann pass, giving the Quakers the lead.
Just under three minutes later, Neumann again had the helper as he set up Forrest Clancy’s first career goal. It took 2:39 for the Red and Blue to add their third goal, Sam Engs banging in the rebound of a Louis Schott deflection following a Clancy corner kick.
The fact that the Quakers had a chance to emerge with the win was thanks in large part to the efforts of Max Polkinhorne in goal. Polkinhorne finished with 12 saves in the win, a new career high. Polkinhorne made six saves in each half, including five to close out the clean sheet after Penn had built its 3-0 lead.
Polkinhorne’s busiest moment came in the 37th minute when he made back-to-back stops on Robert Sagel and Jared Martinelli just 41 seconds apart to keep the match scoreless.
After managing just one shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes, Penn took advantage of substitutions to build its lead. In the 61st minute, the Quakers brought back four starters – Clancy, Lacroix, Neumann and Schott – in addition to the first appearance of the day for Engs. Just over seven minutes later, each of those players had at least one point and Penn was bringing a win back to University City.
Penn’s next match is also against a Keystone State rival as the Quakers head to State College to take on No. 9 Penn State September 24 at 7 p.m.
Notes: The shutout is the second of the season for Polkinhorne and the fourth of his career … With the goal, Duke Lacroix now has 52 career points and is just the eighth Penn player – and third since 1990 – to surpass 50 points …
