MALIBU, Calif. – The No. 10 Pepperdine Waves defeated rival San Diego 4-2 in a nonconference match to open the 2012 season in winning fashion on Friday afternoon. Forward Anisa Guajardo led the way with two goals to open up her senior campaign.

The Waves (1-0-0) also saw sophomore forward Lynn Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) and senior midfielder Ana Pontes (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake HS) score their first goals of the season, with Pontes’ goal being the game winner. Senior goalkeeper Roxanne Barker (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) laid out for some wonderful saves early to thwart the Toreros’ (0-1-0) attack and earn her first win of the season to go along with seven saves.

The scoring got started early for the Waves, junior Michelle Pao (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista HS) reached Williams on a throw in and she deposited a nice pass with her heel that Guajardo (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan HS) drove home over the keeper’s head at the 4:54 mark in the first half.

The Waves built on the 1-0 lead in the 17th minute of the first half, when Guajardo connected with Williams after winning the ball in transition to make the score 2-0.

The Toreros answered in the 33rd minute as Emily Dillon was able to sneak a well-placed ball into the lower left corner past Barker, who had kept San Diego scoreless up to that point due to some stellar saves.

Right before halftime, Pontes, who had not scored a goal since the 2010 season, launched a perfectly placed ball from the top of the box, over the goalkeeper’s head into the top corner to put the Waves up 3-1.

At the half the Waves were outshooting the Toreros 12-5 and had forced San Diego goalkeepers to make two saves.

Just 1:29 into the second half, the Waves again got on the board as a well-struck free kick just inside the offensive half line from Pao hit the head of Guajardo right in stride to put the Waves up 4-1. The goal was Guajardo’s second of the day and the assist marked Pao’s second helper of the day.

The Toreros’ were a lot more offensive minded in the second half, tallying four corner kicks and forcing Barker to make three saves on six shots. They got on the board once more at the 79:21 mark off a goal from Meggie Gulczynski to put the score at 4-2, Waves.

The Waves’ defensive unit, anchored by Barker and redshirt senior defender Kelsea Smith (Camarillo, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) held strong and kept the Toreros scoreless the rest of the way.

The Waves finished with 16 shots and did not take a corner kick in the victory.

The Waves are set to remain at home for the next two games, as they host Auburn on Friday, Aug. 24 at 3 p.m. PT and Pacific at 1 p.m. PT on Sunday, Aug. 26.
