Phoenix edge FMU 1-0 with second-half goal
ELON, NC - Francis Marion University had two match-tying shot attempts turned away in the final nine minutes as Elon University escaped with a 1-0 victory over the Patriots, Sunday afternoon (Sept. 16) in non-conference women's soccer action.
Francis Marion falls to 4-4-1 and will return home to host Prairie View A & M University on Friday evening at 7 p.m. on Hartzler Field.
After a scoreless first half, Elon's Simi Dhaliwal scored in the 76th minute to give the Phoenix a 1-0 advantage.
Elon goalkeeper Kate Murphy made the goal stand up as she made six saves, including two in the final nine minutes. She stopped an attempt by Patriot junior Yasmin Bunter at 81:15 and turned away a shot by sophomore Elizabeth Asare at 86:52.
Elon (2-5-2) held a narrow 11-10 lead in shots, but FMU led in corner kicks 9-3. Bunter and sophomore Brittney Smith each registered two shots for Francis Marion.
FMU freshman goalkeeper Taylor O'Berry recorded eight saves.
