Pinkney, Read Lead Towson Past Duquesne, 2-1
ANNAPOLIS - Freshman Natalia Pinkney scored her first collegiate goal and junior co-captain Sofia Read tallied her second of the year to lead Towson past Duquesne (1-3), 2-1, in the Sunday afternoon game of the Navy Invitational.
For the second consecutive match, the Tigers (3-2-1) scored both of their goals in the second frame. Both goals came after the 80-minute mark: Read in the 81st and Pinkney in the 84th. Senior Emily Banes continued her points streak with an assist on Pinkney's goal. She has now scored at least one point in the last five games and has 14 points on the year.
Pinkney, Banes and junior Taylor Knier were named to the all-tournament team.
"The big thing was we got caught sleeping [giving up a goal] at one minute, so at the half [the coaches] challenged [the players] to come out with energy, and they did," said Head Coach Greg Paynter. "We controlled the game in the second half."
For the second straight game, the Tigers gave up an early goal, this time to the Dukes' Maggie Mayo. Duquesne's one-goal lead lasted into the break and through most of the second half before Read and Rhianna Zalewski connected to even the game at 1-1.
Just three minutes later, Pinkney's strike off a Banes assist beat the Duquesne keeper for the game-winner. Banes passed off when pressured, and Pinkney struck from 20 yards out to the far post. Banes has now had a hand in all three of Towson's game-winning goals this year.
Towson out-shot Duquesne 11-6. Senior Erin Quinn made four saves for the Tigers.
Towson returns to action on Friday, September 13 and Sunday, September 15 when the Tigers host Bucknell (4 p.m.) and Yale (1 p.m.), respectively.
