Pioneers Stay on the Attack in 3-0 Win over FAU
BOCA RATON, Fla. - The University of Denver women's soccer team earned its 21stconsecutive Sun Belt Conference win on Friday night, as three second half goals and the Pioneers fourth-straight shutout gave DU the 3-0 win.
Junior midfielder Kalie Vaughn (Fort Collins, Colo.), senior midfielder Bria Beardsley(Mission Viejo, Calif.) and junior forward Katy Van Lieshout (Boulder, Colo.) scored the three goals for the Pioneers (13-2-0, 7-0-0 SBC). Junior goalkeepers Lara Campbell (Anchorage, Alaska) and Maria Khan (Aurora, Colo.) stretched the Pioneers' streak without allowing a goal to 467 minutes.
"They gave us a lot of trouble in the first half," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "Even though we had 12 shots (in the first half), their defense limited the quality of those chances. In the second half I thought that we were a lot more efficient and got the three goals."
Vaughn opened the scoring in the 64th minute with her eighth goal of the season on an assist from freshman midfielder Anna Willis (Centennial, Colo.). Willis beat her defender in the box before laying it to a diagonal running Vaughn, who took a pair of touches before slotting it into the back of the net.
Beardsley's goal came in the 68th minute on senior forward Taylor Bailey's (Loveland, Colo.) third assist of the season. Bailey played the ball to Beardsley who cracked a shot from 30 yards out, and the senior midfielder beat Owls goalkeeper Ashley Lantes to give the Pioneers a two goal cushion. The goal was Beardsley's second of the season.
Van Lieshout wrapped up the scoring in the 80th minute of the match on an assist from freshman midfielder Caitlin Higgins (Boulder, Colo.). Higgins won the ball off an Owls clearance, took a touch, and then played Van Lieshout on the run, who knocked it in from the top of the box.
The Pioneers held a 21-1 advantage on shots over the Owls (5-8-1, 1-5-1 SBC) in the match and had all eight corner kicks.
Denver next will head to Florida International for a Sunday matinee, taking on the Golden Panthers at 10 a.m. MT.
