Pirates And Phoenix Play To A 1-1 Draw
ELON, N.C. --- The East Carolina soccer team battled Elon to a 1-1 double overtime draw at Rudd Field Sunday afternoon. Both teams were coming off season opening victories on Friday night.
"It was an extremely tough game for us," Pirate head coach Rob Donnenwirth said. "Elon played extremely well and put us under a lot of pressure. We made some errors when we were up a goal, but I think we'll learn from those mistakes and be better in the future."
The match was scoreless for 83 minutes before ECU junior Stephanie Seagrave scored her first goal of the season off a corner kick from freshman Autumn Berry to give the Pirates (1-0-1) a 1-0 advantage. However, Elon (1-0-1) tied the game less than three minutes later as Chelsey Stark scored with 3:33 remaining.
The Phoenix had an opportunity to win the regulation time, but ECU goalkeeper Saundra Baron denied Olivia Mackey's penalty kick with 1.5 seconds to play sending the game into overtime.
"Saundra made some huge saves today and put out of some fires for us," Donnenwirth said. "They got off a lot of shots and our defense did a good job of turning them back."
Baron collected eight saves against nine shots on goal. ECU attempted just three total shots, including just one on goal, compared to Elon's 25. The Pirates were outshot 10-1 in the first half and 15-2 in the 65 minutes that followed. The Phoenix ended the match with a 14-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Pirates return to action Friday night at 7:30 as they open their 2013 home schedule against UNCG.
