Pirates Bounce CC From SCAC Tourney
Some nights it's better to be lucky than good.
Despite being thoroughly outplayed during most of the second half, Southwestern University scored 7:22 into overtime to defeat Colorado College, 2-1, in a semifinal match of the 2013 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
Steven Resnik's cross caromed off a Tiger defender and into an open net, sending the Pirates into Sunday's championship game against top-seed Trinity University.
CC, which was playing its second game in 26 hours, outshot the host Pirates, 9-2, during the second stanza and appeared to have all the momentum.
Senior defender Patrick Robinson notched the equalizer in the 74th minute with a header off a corner kick by freshman defender Christian Wulff. It was Robinson's first goal of the season and the second of his career.
Ian Horne made five of his six saves during the first half to keep Colorado College within striking distance.
The sophomore goalkeeper made a diving save in the 21st minute to deny Michael Olivares from 12 yards out on the right side of the box.
He also came up big with 1:04 remaining in regulation on a shot by Garhett Bonneaux.
Senior Daniel Poole stopped six shots for Southwestern, which improved to 14-6-1.
Poole also picked up an assist on Southwestern's first goal, when Olivares ran down his long kick in the 29 minute.
The Tigers recorded a 16-11 advantage in total shots, while the Pirates had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
CC finished its regular season with a 14-6-2 record.
