Pitt Crew ends season with 3-0 win vs SC St.
FLORENCE, S.C. – Junior midfielder Jordan Allen scored just 4:04 into Wednesday evening’s (Oct. 24) match and Francis Marion University went on to claim a 3-0 season-ending victory over South Carolina State University in women’s soccer action.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Frank Pitt, the Patriots finish the 2012 campaign at 7-9-1, the program’s highest win total since 2007. FMU also ended the year an unblemished 6-0-0 mark at its new Hartzler Field, the team’s first unbeaten home slate since 2007 and only the fourth in program history.
FMU also celebrated Senior Night by honoring forward Kelly Kady, who nearly scored on a cross in the second half, and defender Rebeccah Hoekstra, who had a goal waved off in the opening stanza when a Patriot was called for a foul in the 6-yard box on a corner kick.
Allen opened the scoring with her first goal of 2012 when she connected on a 5-yard header off a service from sophomore Brittney Smith.
The margin grew to 2-0 just after halftime when sophomore forward Dominique Evans gathered a loose ball and knocked home a 4-yard shot at the 46:12 mark. The sequence began with a corner kick by sophomore Sandy Odembo.
FMU junior midfielder Yasmin Bunter tallied her team-leading seventh goal at 85:02 to conclude the scoring. After collecting a loose ball in the Bulldog defensive end, she scorched a 17-yard shot past S.C. State goalkeeper Haley Austin.
S.C. State finishes its regular season with a 7-11-0 record. Austin recorded six saves.
FMU freshman goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry registered seven saves en route to her fourth shutout of the year. She entered the contest ranked 30th in NCAA Division I with 95 saves.
Francis Marion outshot the Bulldogs 16-9, but only three of the S.C. offerings were from within the penalty area. The Patriots also led in corner kicks 4-1.
