Pitt-Greensburg
FROSTBURG, Md.—Buffalo State (1-0) won just one game all of last season, but the Bengals matched that total in today's season opener when senior captain Anthony Appiani (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) netted the overtime winner to start the head coach Mark Howlett era with a 2-1 victory over Pitt-Greensburg (0-1) in the Frostburg State Invitational.
Buffalo State controlled the bulk of the play in the game and took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick goal C.J. Scirto (Lockport/St. Joe's) in the first half. The Bobcats took advantage of a penalty kick of their own earn in the second period and held on to force overtime.
Appiani jumped on a loose ball off of a corner kick just 4:27 into the extra period to lift Buffalo State to victory.
Buffalo State outshot Pitt-Greensburg 24-9 for the game. Ian Huntoon (Stamford, CT/West Hill) played the first half and needed to make just one save, while Robby Kuhnle (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) went the rest of the way, making two saves while allowing the only tally on a penalty kick.
The Bengals will wrap up the Frostburg Invitational tomorrow against Grove City at noon.
