Pitt Men’s Soccer Forward Nico Wrobel Named the Big East Offensive Player of the Week
Goalkeeper Lee Johnston Selected to Honor Roll

PITTSBURGH – Pitt junior Nico Wrobel was named Big East Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. The forward scored three goals, two of those game-winners, in a 2-0 week for the Panthers.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lee Johnston was also recognized for his stellar play, earning a spot on the weekly honor roll.

Wrobel scored twice in Pitt’s 3-1 win over IPFW at the Pitt/Nike Invitational on Friday evening. The Berlin, Germany product converted two penalty kick opportunities for Pitt scores.

In a 1-0 win against Delaware on Sunday, Wrobel lined up for his seventh career penalty kick. Wrobel’s shot was stopped, but he was able to score with his rebound attempt. For his efforts, Wrobel was tabbed to the Pitt/Nike Invitational all-tournament team.

Wrobel has tallied four goals on the season as the Panthers (3-2-0) remain unbeaten through five games for the first time since 2002.

Johnston had 12 saves in Pitt’s two weekend victories. The Newberry, Fla. native was solid in goal versus the Blue Hens with nine saves, including five over a six-minute second half span. The second-year stopper posted a .923 save percentage in the two wins, helping Pitt capture its own tournament and earning Pitt/Nike Invitational MVP honors.

The Panthers return to action on Friday, Sept. 14, hosting Northern Kentucky at 7 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field at the Petersen Sports Complex.
