Portland men's soccer adds six for 2015
Shane Aranda (Phoenix, Ariz./North HS), Reid Baez (Salem, Ore./Sprague HS), Jackson Jellah (Phoenix, Ariz./Sandra Day O'Connor HS), Joey Jones (Omaha, Neb./De La sale HS), Lionel Mills (Kula, Hawai'i/King Kekaulike HS) and Brennan Weber (Gresham, Ore./Central Catholic HS) have each signed to play men's soccer at the University of Portland. The six incoming recruits will join the Pilots as freshmen next fall.
Shane Aranda
5-10, MF
Phoenix, Ariz./North HS
Club: Valparaiso
Aranda, who is a 5-10 midfielder, helped his North High School Mustangs reach a No. 17 national ranking by scoring 14 goals and adding 22 assists, which led the team. The Mustangs reached the playoffs twice in Aranda's three years on varsity and they won the Dobson Invitational last December. The midfielder also once tallied three goals and two assists during a single game.
Aranda was a part of the Arizona 97 ODP (2009-12, 2014) and participated in the Regional ODP Camp in 2011 and 2012. He won a state championship with his Sereno Club team before reaching the regional finals with Valparaiso in 2014.
Reid Baez
5-9, MF/F
Salem, Ore./Sprague HS
Club: Portland Timbers Academy
Baez is a 5-9 midfielder/forward who earned second-team all-league honors as a freshman in his one year playing for the Sprague Olympians. Baez was with Region IV and Oregon ODP in 2010, 2011 and 2012. After playing with the Boca Juniors, Baez has been with the Portland Timbers Academy since 2013. A team captain in 2013 and 2014, Baez is a top-three goal scorer in the history of the Academy and he was named the Player of the Week by the US Soccer Development Academy in 2014. He's ranked in Top Drawer Soccer's Top 150 Players for the 2015 class and he was named to the All-West Coast Team.
Jackson Jellah
5-9, MF/F
Phoenix, Ariz./Sandra Day O'Connor Eagles HS
Club: CCV Stars
A 5-9 midfielder/striker, Jackson Jellah is spent two years playing for the Sandra Day O'Connor High School Eagles, while also starring for the CCV Stars 97 Boys Black club team. With the Eagles, Jellah was named to the AIA All-Section DI First Team for Section IV. He was also named the outstanding junior in 2013-14.
Playing club, Jellah won multiple Arizona State Championships, while also claiming the 2011 Surf Thanksgiving Tournament. His club teams also won three straight Arizona State League 1 titles.
Joey Jones
5-11, F
Omaha, Neb./De La Salle (Calif.)
Club: Diablo FC
5-11 forward Joey Jones led the De La Salle Spartans in goals for the past three seasons, while being named the team's offensive MVP all three years. A four-year letterwinner and a three-time all-league selection, Jones helped the Spartans win the North Coast Section Championship in 2013 and 2014. The Spartans also claimed the league title both those years.
A member of the U-14 US National Team Pool in 2011, Jones played with the Region I ODP Team in 2010 and the Region II ODP team in 2011. He was also with Maryland ODP in 2010 and Illinois ODP in 2011. With his club teams, Jones won a pair of regional championships and he advanced to the US Youth Soccer National Finals in Arizona in 2011.
Lionel Mills
5-11, D
Kula, Hawai'i/King Kekaulike HS
Club: Maui Strikers
Lionel Mills is a 5-11 defender who earned four varsity letters with the King Kekaulike Na Ali'i. He was the MIL Player of the year in 2013 and he landed on the all-league first team in both 2013 and 2014 after garnering second-team honors in 2012. A team MVP, Mills led the Na Ali'i in goals scored and he helped lead the team to a 10-1-1 record as a junior in 2013.
Mills received an official tryout invitation to the West Ham United Academy in 2013, he was the 2014 College Camp MVP and he was on the Portland Timbers U-18 roster in 2014. Mills won the golden ball with the Region IV ODP in 2013 and he participated in the Hawai'i ODP in 2013 and 2014. He also performed well in a handful of elite tournaments with his Maui Strikers club team.
Brennan Weber
6-2, MF
Gresham, Ore./Central Catholic HS
Club: Eastside Timbers
Brennan Weber is a 6-2 midfielder who was named Oregon's 6A Player of the Year as a senior last fall. He also landed first team all-state after helping lead the Central Catholic Rams to the Oregon State Championship. The Rams won three Mount Hood Conference Championships in Weber's three years on varsity, finished second in the state in 2013 and reached the quarterfinals in 2012. Weber was also named first-team all-state last fall after registering 11 goals, five game-winners and eight assists. He was named the league's offensive player of the year as well.
Weber played for the Portland Timbers Academy while also excelling for the Eastside Timbers club. A member of ODP (2009-11), he helped his club team win the OPL State Championship.
Weber's dad Jim (1986-89) was a standout for the Pilots before moving on to a professional career with both the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders.
