Portland State Bests Titans 2-0 in Reno
BOX SCORE
RENO, Nev. -- The Titans (4-2-1) fell 2-0 to Portland State (4-2-0) in the second and final contest for Detroit in the Wolf Pack Invitational played at the University of Nevada in Reno, Nevada.
Each team finished with seven total shots, but in the end it was a goal from Portland State at the 15:53 mark that held up as the game-winner. The Vikings added an insurance marker 69 minutes into the contest en route to the 2-0 victory.
“Portland State is a good team but the bottom line is we made too many mistakes. Their first goal came on a counter attack out of the midfield and on the second, they took a long shot and it beat our goalkeeper,” said Titan head coach Mike Lupenec.
Offensive pressure from Portland State in the second half led to three straight corner kicks in a five-minute span which led to the final Viking goal being scored.
“We didn't score many goals this weekend and we'll need to figure that out against the better opponents coming up and for when we get into conference play,” said Lupenec.
Sophomore Abby McCollum (La Salle, MI/Monroe) led the Titans with two shots, including one on goal 35 minutes into the opening half.
“Overall we competed well and it was a good learning experience going forward. When we get back, we'll focus on fixing some of our offensive problems and get ready for our next game,” added Lupenec.
Detroit will return home and host Madonna Thursday at Titan Field. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
