Princeton Gets the Best of Dartmouth

PRINCETON, N.J. - Sophomore Patrick Murray (Lakewood, Ohio) scored the equalizer to send the game to overtime but host Princeton got the best of the Dartmouth men's soccer team in overtime, posting a 2-1 win in the Ivy League opener for both teams.

Deadlocked at 1-1 after playing nearly 53 minutes of even soccer, Princeton used a goal from Cameron Porter just 1:45 into overtime to seal the win. Porter, who posted a shot just wide near the end of regulation, sprinted down the sideline into the box and nailed a shot that deflected off Noah Cohen's (Johannesburg, South Africa) hands for the game-winner.

The loss snapped Dartmouth's five-game Ivy League winning streak and moves the Big Green to 3-2-3 in Ivy League openers over the last eight seasons. The loss was also the second overtime loss this season for the Big Green. Dartmouth also lost, 2-1, to then-No. 4 UConn in its season-opener. Dartmouth has played three overtime contests this season and is 1-2 when playing extra time.

Princeton (5-3-1, 1-0 Ivy League) used its sibling connection for the first score of the contest. Thomas Sanner connected with a ball from brother Matt and fired into the far corner to open the nights scoring.

Dartmouth (3-5-0, 0-1 Ivy League) struggled to find offense throughout the game, as the Tigers outshot the Big Green, 17-7, while placing eight shots on goal. Despite the offensive struggles, the Big Green managed to get the tying goal in the 38th minute of action.

Murray, seeing time off the bench,  scooped up a bouncing ball in the box and  managed to send it past Princeton's Seth MacMillan for the equalizer.

Princeton made Cohen work in the second half, opening the second stanza with three quick shots, forcing Cohen to make three of his six saves early in the half. The Tigers also held a 9-2 advantage on corner kicks.

Colin Heffron (Upper Brookville, N.Y.) and Kevin Dzierzawski (Oakland Township, Mich.) provided much of the Dartmouth offense each recording two shots in the contest, in addition to Murray's two.

Dartmouth closes its five-game road swing on Wednesday, Oct. 3, when it travels to Vermont to take on the Catamounts. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at UVM's Virtue Field.
