Pritchard, Mustangs roll Southwest Baptist, 3-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State looked to be in midseason form Thursday night in a convincing 3-0 win over Southwest Baptist (Mo.) at the MSU Soccer Field.
The Mustangs controlled possession and pieced together combinations at will by outshooting the Bearcats 34-4 including a 17-2 edge in shots on frame.
"We''re happy to win early in the season especially playing the tough opponents we are," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "I''m proud of how hard the girls are playing."
Senior forward Kelsey Hill put MSU on top in the 15th minute when she headed in her second tally of the season off of a combination from Payton Fookes and Lindsay Pritchard from the left wing for a 1-0 lead.
Pritchard, who had a hand in each of the Mustangs'' goals, served a short cross to Emily Saville who fired her second goal of the campaign past SBU keeper Megan Link to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead in the 56th minute.
"Our forwards are doing a good job of playing off of each other and creating opportunities," Trimble said.
Pritchard, a senior from Whitehouse, kept the SBU back line busy all night as she placed seven of her team high 12 shots on frame and finally put her first goal of the season in the back of the net off of an assist from Hill in the 85th minute.
Trimble also credited the play of Maddie Fraser, who has extended her play to cover the central midfield and serve as a withdrawn forward.
"Maddie''s work rate is awesome," he said after Fraser worked for seven shots against the Bearcats. "She distributes the ball very well and is playing at a high level."
The Mustangs backline of senior Heidi Avila, juniors Hanna Staley and Megan Barnhart and freshman Callie Briseno restricted the Bearcats to four total shots as junior goalkeeper Mallory Whitworth needed to make just two saves to notch her second shutout of the season.
Midwestern State kicks off Lone Star Conference play next Friday by playing host to Angelo State at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
