Purdue Shut Out for First Time in 2015
MISSOULA, Mont. (www.purduesports.com) – Purdue women’s soccer had decisive advantages in shots and corner kicks but was shut out for the first time this season in a 2-0 loss to Seattle Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the Montana Cup.
The Boilermakers (5-2) trailed for much of the game after Seattle (5-2) opened the scoring in the 15th minute. It marked the first time this year that Purdue did not score first and trailed at halftime. Meanwhile, while being shut out for the first time under first-year head coach Drew Roff, the Boilers’ saw their eight-game scoring streak in regular-season action snapped. It dated back to the 2014 season finale.
Purdue had a 14-6 edge in shots and a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks. However, the Boilers recorded just four shots on goal. Coincidentally, Purdue had 13 corners in the 2-2 draw with Seattle two years ago at the Boilermaker Soccer Complex. The 12 corner kicks were Purdue’s most since also having a dozen in the loss to Indiana last year.
Seattle has qualified for the last two NCAA Tournaments and took South Carolina to penalty kicks in the second round a year ago. The Redhawks had already posted wins against Oregon and Vanderbilt this season.
Summer Mason opened the scoring in the 15th minute with her third goal of the season, scoring with a diagonal shot from the right end line inside the far post. At the start of the 50th minute, Hannah Carrothers made it a 2-0 game with her first goal of the year. She scored with a shot inside the left post after splitting a pair of defenders.
Hannah Leinert (four, two SOG) led the way as one of four Boilermakers to record multiple shots. Seattle goalkeeper Brianna Smallidge was forced to deflect a Leinert shot out of bounds in the 77th minute, leading to Purdue’s 12th and final corner kick of the day. The Boilers also had three corner kick chances in the 71st minute. Purdue had a 6-3 edge in shots and 5-1 advantage in corner kicks at the half.
Goalkeeper Jordan Ginther made her first start of the season, and 14th career, Sunday. Kim Love went the distance for the 15th straight game dating back to last season. Hannah Mussallem logged 49 minutes to lead the reserves. Gabby LaMere, Ginanna Milaro and Mussallem were the first Boilers to enter the game off the bench.
Purdue returns to action Friday when it hosts Northwestern Friday at 7 p.m. in the Big Ten Conference opener for both teams.
