BEREA — The early-goal nemesis returned Saturday as Wilmington College dropped a 2-0 Ohio Athletic Conference decision at Baldwin-Wallace.
The Quakers are now 3-4-0 in the OAC, 5-9-3 overall. Baldwin-Wallace moves to 3-4-0 in the conference, 10-7-0 for the season. Wilmington, Baldwin-Wallace and Heidelberg are tied for fifth place in the conference standings with two regular-season games remaining. The top six teams in the regular-season standings will qualify for the OAC Tournament.
Two weeks after surrendering an early goal to John Carroll in a 2-0 loss, Wilmington again was victimized Saturday when Baldwin-Wallace went up, 1-0, on a Hanna Cavalier goal in the 9th minute of play.
“That was the difference in the game. We had a chance to score 5 minutes in, but we shot the ball wide. If we make that goal, that may have changed the whole game for us,” Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk said.
Baldwin-Wallace, which out-shot Wilmington, 9-1, in the first half, took a 2-0 lead when Elizabeth Helser scored in the 27th minute.
“We gave up two early goals because we weren’t as aggressive and physical as we needed to be, and they made us pay for it,” Spirk said.
The play evened out in the second half as both teams took five shots, but Wilmington was unable to find the Baldwin-Wallace goal.
Despite being out-shot, 14-6, for the game, Wilmington owned a 4-3 corner kicks advantage.
“We definitely picked up our game in the second half. If we would have played the first half like we played the second half, we might have won this game,” Spirk said.
Abbey Williamson (Grove City/Bishop Ready) went the distance in goal and made five saves.
The Quakers will host defending conference champion Otterbein at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Cardinals are now 5-1-1 in the OAC after posting a 3-0 win over Muskingum Saturday.
“We have Otterbein Wednesday and Heidelberg Saturday. The good news is that we have two games left and they are both at home. We still control our own destiny. We don’t have to rely on other people to do something for us. You can’t ask for more than that,” Spirk said.
