Quakers fall to No. 18 Ohio Northern

ADA — Eighteenth-ranked Ohio Northern scored a pair of second-half goals to hand Wilmington College a 2-0 loss in Ohio Athletic Conference action at ONU Soccer Field Tuesday afternoon.
The loss leaves the Quakers at 3-3-0 in the OAC, 5-8-3 overall. Ohio Northern improves to 6-0-0 in the conference 12-1-2 for the season.
The game went to the half scoreless, but not without good opportunities for both teams. Ohio Northern took 12 shots to Wilmington''s 6, but the Quakers put three efforts on frame to Ohio Northern''s two.
Wilmington applied pressure early in the second half, but an Erin Moore (Grove City) shot was stopped by Ohio Northern goalkeeper Erin Waehner. From that point, the game tilted toward the Polar Bears.
Ohio Northern broke through when Sami Atkinson scored in the 67th minute.
The back-breaker came 17 minutes later when ONU was awarded a penalty kick, and Alyssa Merrick converted to give the Polar Bears a 2-0 advantage.
For the game, Ohio Northern out-shot Wilmington, 21-7. The Polar Bears enjoyed a 4-2 corner kick advantage.
Abbey Williamson (Grove City/Bishop Ready) went the distance in goal for Wilmington and made seven saves.
The Quakers will remain on the highway for a key OAC match-up with Baldwin-Wallace 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Berea.
