After being shut out for three straight games, it was likely that somebody would be paying for Wilmington College’s frustration. Marietta proved to be that somebody as the Quakers rolled to a 5-1 win on a wind-swept Saturday afternoon at Charlie Gilhart Field.
Wilmington is now 3-2-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, 5-7-3 overall. Marietta drops to 0-5-0 in the conference, 1-12-1 for the season.
The Quakers did not waste time in breaking their drought.
Lauren Mumaw (Dayton/Dayton Christian) collected a loose ball and slid a shot past the Marietta keeper in the 11th minute.
The lead grew to 2-0 when Lauren Price (Xenia/Waynesville) scored off a Sammy Koerner (Fairfield/Badin) assist in the 36th minute.
“It was good to score goals. I thought the first half was the key when we scored two goals against the wind,” Wilmington assistant coach Bob Dessecker said. “We talked about keeping the ball to feet, and not just banging it and getting it up in the air. That was going to be a fruitless effort against the wind. We have proved all year that when we play to feet, we pass the ball and move the ball well.”
Marietta made things interesting when Melini Feitl scored early in the second half to slice Wilmington’s lead in half.
“I think that goal got our attention,” Dessecker said. “We talked about not letting them run free. They made a couple good passes and scored. I think it woke us up a little bit.”
Five minutes later, Sarah Watters (Cincinnati/Turpin) restored the Quakers’ two-goal advantage with a score off a Mumaw assist.
Price added her second goal of the game, assisted by Sammi Miller (West Chester/Lakota East), in the 67th minute.
Rachel Gutowski (Petoskey, Mich.) finished the scoring with a goal off an Ashley Garcia (Riverside/Stebbins) assist in the 90th minute.
For the game, Wilmington out-shot Marietta, 17-11. Marietta owned a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Wilmington will travel to Ada to face OAC-leading Ohio Northern at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
