Quick Strikes, Defense Lead Colorado College
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior forwards Daniel Wright and Matt Fechter struck in a span of 6:04 early in the second half and the defense turned in a dominating effort to lead Colorado College a 2-0 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan University Monday afternoon at CC’s Stewart Field.
Unfortunately, CC’s goals weren’t the only lightning strikes of the day.
The Tigers had to wait out three lightning delays totaling 107 minutes before putting the finishing touches on their second straight win and their first shutout of the season.
For the second game in a row, CC did all of its scoring in the second half and it was the three captains who were involved in both goals.
Wright broke a scoreless tie in the 49th minute when he blocked a clearing attempt by Nebraska Wesleyan goalkeeper Zach Mergens. The ball went off Wright’s hip and spun into the goal near the right post. Junior forward Lorenzo Pozzolini started the play with a perfect lead pass to Wright who was streaking toward the left post.
“It was great pass by Lorenzo,” Wright said. “We were trying to get it in behind them. It was a through ball and I was fifty-fifty with the keeper. I got a little lucky.”
The tally proved to be Wright’s second game winner of the season and the fifth of his career.
The Tigers doubled their lead a little more than six minutes later when Fechter chased down a long pass from junior forward Sean Parham/co-captain on the left side, moved around the defense and threaded a shot between the keeper and the left post.
CC nearly made it 3-0 with 31:47 to play, but Mergens got a hand on a Parham shot from 12 yards out and the ball went off and over the crossbar.
Mergens made seven saves to keep the PrairieWolves within striking distance.
The Colorado College defense also turned in a dominating effort, allowing just four total shots by NWU. The Tigers have now played 173:03 without allowing a goal.
“(Nick) Lammers and (Andrew) Worthington were stellar,” head coach Horst Richardson said. “They got precious few sniffs of our goal. No problem with the defense.”
Senior Brian Graf stopped the only shot he faced during the first half. Senior Forrest Marowitz, who made just one save during the final 45 minutes, earned the victory in goal.
The game was delayed for 36 minutes with 5:47 to play before halftime because of lightning within an 8-mile radius. The second delay occurred with 14:40 remaining in the game and lasted another 46 minutes. The game nearly restarted at 6:43 MT, but another strike occurred just as the players were lining up to resume play.
Colorado College begins a three-game road swing on Wednesday night when it makes the short trip across town to face the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
