Quigley Leads Men’s Soccer Past Central Connecticut, 2-1
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Led by sophomore Tim Quigley’s (Ridgefield, Conn.) first two goals of the season, the Quinnipiac men’s soccer team defeated Northeast Conference opponent Central Connecticut, 2-1, on Friday afternoon. The win improves the Bobcats’ NEC record to 4-3 and its overall record to 6-7, while the loss drops the Blue Devils to 5-3 in NEC action and 8-8 overall.
Quinnipiac gained a 1-0 advantage late in the first half, as Quigley’s first goal of the season in the 42nd minute of action gave the Bobcats the lead heading into halftime.
Despite being outshot in the first-half, 17-to-6, freshman goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) stayed strong in goal for the Bobcats, making a career-best seven first-half saves. Overall, Angoitia turned away a game-high 10 shots on the afternoon, while his counterpart junior Anthony Occhialini made five saves for Central Connecticut.
Quigley gave Quinnipiac the two-goal cushion in the second half, netting his second goal of the contest off an assist from senior Matthew Rothbart (Cheshire, Conn.) in the 67th minute of action. Rothbart’s initial shot was saved, but Quigley was in position to control and knock in the ball from five yards out, by Occhialini.
The Blue Devils scored its only goal of the contest in the 84th minute of play, as junior Reece Wilson netted his fourth goal of the season off an assist from junior Thomas Obasi.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 30 when it hosts NEC opponent Long Island at 2:30 p.m.
