Quinnipiac Men’s Soccer Falls To Yale In Tight Match, 3-2
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men’s soccer team found itself on the losing end of a highly competitive contest against cross-town rival Yale, in which a late goal in the 88th minute gave the Bulldogs the 3-2 victory on Friday night at Reese Stadium. Junior forward Philip Suprise (Milwaukee, Wisc.) and senior forward Durval Pereira (Cheshire, Conn.) each collected a goal and an assist on the evening for the Bobcats, which saw its record fall to 0-3 on the season. Yale improves to 2-1 with the win.
Quinnipiac was first to take hold of the game’s momentum, as a goal from Pereira in the 33rd minute of play gave the Bobcats the 1-0 lead. The goal developed quickly with a pass from Suprise to freshman Nils von der Heide (Munich, Germany), who one-timed it to an open Pereira. The captain struck the ball by Yale goalkeeper Bobby Thalman for his first goal of the season.
Yale countered with two quick goals in the second half (56th minute and 60th minute tallies), to take a 2-1 lead, on scores from Jenner Fox and Peter Jacobson.
The Bobcats were reluctant to back down and tied the score at two apiece in the 85th minute of play on Suprise’s first score of the season. The junior received a pass from Pereira and drilled a shot from 25 yards out, sending into the top corner of the net.
Quinnipiac was unable to keep the score tied, as Yale’s Charlie Neil scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute to give the Bulldogs the 3-2 victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Vizcaya) made three saves in net for Quinnipiac, while his counterpart Thalman turned away two shots. Overall, Yale outshot Quinnipiac in the contest, 16 to 10.
The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 14 when they host Hartford at 4 p.m.
