Quinnipiac Survives Iona Comeback
HAMDEN, CT – The Quinnipiac Bobcats used a second half surge to take down Iona at QU Soccer Field on Wednesday afternoon, 2-1. Junior Amber Crispin accounted for the lone Gael goal with her first score since the season-opener against Sacred Heart.
MATCH SUMMARY
Iona and Quinnipiac played an evenly matched first half. Iona had five shots in the first half, forcing Olivia Myszewski to make four saves. Graduate Christine Rebus, sophomore Katie Benson, freshman Andrea Ferrer and junior Mariah Elsenheimer had the first shots on goal for the Gaels.The Bobcats main offensive chances in the opening portion came via corner kicks. They had four in the first half and ended the game with season.
The beginning of the second half of the contest played out much like Iona's last game against Marist. The Maroon & Gold were
outshot 8-1 in the second half against the Red Foxes and the Bobcats had a 7-0 edge over the first 20 minutes following halftime.
Quinnipiac struck first in the 54' with Kelsey Goldring scoring her fourth goal of the season off an assist from Selena Salas. The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead in the 66' with a score from Al Pellitier, assisted by Jenn Maldonado and Jess Gargan. Crispin's goal came less the two minutes after the Bobcats eked out to a two-nil lead. Rookie Faith Preziosiassisted on Crispin's team-leading third goal of the season in the 68'. The score came after sophomore Katie Benson had Iona's first shot of the second half go wide in the 67'.
Junior Ciara Guglielmo, freshman Gabriella Cocucci and rookie Mackenzie Meixner combined to test Quinnipiac with five shots over the final 10 minutes of regulation.
STATISTICAL NOTES
- Crispin scored her team-leading third goal and her first score in MAAC play since Oct. 21, 2016 against Niagara.
- Preziosi's assist is the first as a Gael. She is the first underclassmen to get an assist this season.
- Iona finished the game outshooting Quinnipiac, 13-12. It is the first time since the season-opener on Aug. 17 against Sacred Heart that the Gaels outshot their opponent.
- The Maroon & Gold also had more shots on goal, the first time they won that category since Sept. 2 against Wagner.
- Wednesday's 13 shots is a season-best for Iona as a team. The previous was 12 against Sacred Heart.

Iona's next game is on the road against the Canisius Golden Griffins in Buffalo, NY. Kickoff is set for 1 pm at Demske Sports Complex. The game is being broadcasted on ESPN3.
