Rambelles even LSC record with loss
ABILENE – The Angelo State soccer team fell 2-0 to No. 12 Abilene Christian on Sunday at the Wildcat Soccer Pitch. The loss evens the Rambelles' Lone Star Conference record at 1-1 and drops them to 2-4 overall on the season.
Angelo State, which was coming off a 1-0 win over No. 22 Midwestern State on Friday, fell to 1-3 in road games with the loss.
“Our energy level just didn't match Abilene Christian's today,” ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said. “I think we did some good things, but we just didn't do them often enough. I know that sounds simplistic, but we are a very good team when we are focused and have maximum effort. That just wasn't there the entire game.”
The Rambelles return to the ASU Soccer Field at 4 p.m. on Friday against Texas A&M-Commerce and at 1 p.m. next Sunday against Texas Womans' University.
Krysta Grimm scored both goals for the Wildcats – first on an assist from Whitley Lindholm in the 17th minute and then a second-half goal on an assist from Madison Brown in the 75th minute. Abilene Christian improves its' overall record to 5-0-1 and moves its' LSC record to 1-0-1. The Wildcats, who are now 6-1 all-time against ASU, were coming off a 1-1 tie against Incarnate Word on Friday in their conference opener.
The Rambelles were outshot 21-9 in the match, with Brandie DeBacker and Lauren Carnes each having three shots to lead the team. Hanna Horeis added two shots and Maggie Schaffer one. Taylor Cardinal had five saves in goal for the Rambelles.
“It seemed like they were anticipating our moves even before we were,” ASU sophomore defender Trisha Killen said. “We needed more movement to stop being as predictable. They are a very good team that took advantage of us not playing our best.”
Coaches and Player Quotes
Head coach Travis McCorkle
On the Rambelles' 2-0 loss on Sunday to Abilene Christian: Our energy level just didn't match theirs today. I think we did some good things, but we just didn't do them often enough. I know that sounds simplistic, but we are a very good team when we are focused and have maximum effort. That just wasn't there the entire game.
On the start of Lone Star Conference play: I'm taking away the thought that we have the potential to be a great team. We saw how we good of a team we can be against Midwestern and things that we could do even better. From scoring to defending, there is still plenty of room to grow for our team.
On returning home next week to play Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas Womans': We haven't played at home hardly at all this season, so we have to be ready to perform this weekend. When you're at home, you have to play with 100 percent of your effort. You have to put your best foot forward and win games when you're at home. We have to do that next weekend.
Katelyn West: Sophomore midfielder from Amarillo
On the Rambelles' 2-0 loss at Abilene Christian on Sunday: They pretty much just outworked us the entire game. They were always moving off the ball and we were not. We need to take what they did against us and do it in games.
On the start of Lone Star Conference play: We gained some confidence beating Midwestern State that hopefully we can carry over. We can't dwell on losing to ACU. They are a good team and we still believe we can beat them if we play better.
Trisha Killen: Sophomore defender from North Richland Hills
On the Rambelles' 2-0 loss against Abilene Christian on Sunday: It seemed like they were anticipating our moves even before we were. We needed more movement to stop being as predictable. They are a very good team that took advantage of us not playing our best.
On the start of Lone Star Conference play: We believe that we can beat any team in this conference. Even with the loss, we are taking away some confidence that we can compete against them.
On returning home to play games at the ASU Soccer Field again: I'm looking forward to playing on our home soil in front of our fans. There's a pride in playing at home and we have to show that next week.
