Rambelles fall 1-2 at Texas Woman's
DENTON – The Angelo State soccer team's program-best five game winning streak ended on Sunday with a 1-2 Lone Star Conference loss to Texas Woman's at the Pioneer Soccer Field.
The Rambelles (6-3-1, 2-1-0 LSC) dropped their first conference game of the season after starting LSC play with wins over Midwestern State and No. 24 Texas A&M-Commerce. The Rambelles, who are now tied with MSU (7-3-0, 2-1-0 LSC) atop the conference standings with six points each, end their five-game road trip with a 4-1-0 record and are now 4-1-1 on the road this season.
"We lacked some concentration today on things that had gotten us to this point," ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said. "There was a letdown after we got the first goal on defense and we had another opportunity to get another goal that we missed on. We didn't have the right mental approach to put the game out of reach. I thought we could have put a good exclamation point to this road trip and unfortunately we didn't."
Brittany Martinez gave Angelo State a 1-0 lead with a corner kick goal at the 53:45 minute mark of the game, but TWU would score two unanswered goals for the win. Gabrielle Larson struck first for the Pioneers off an assist from Tori Crook (58:52) and Haleigh Wanzer scored the game-winner off an assist from Emily Davila with nine minutes remaining in the game.
Angelo State outshot TWU 11-7, while the teams were tied in shots-on goal with four each. ASU had its shots in the game come from Maggie Schaffer and Selena Alvarez leading the Rambelles with three shots each. Sierra Anderson added two shots, while Cynthia Andrews and Katie Squires also had shots. Martinez's goal was her first this season and second in her career.
ASU goalkeeper Dani Edwards recorded two saves in the loss and now has 28 saves this season.
"A lot of it today was our intensity," Edwards said. "We didn't play with as much heart as we have been playing with. We need to get back to communicating better with each other and playing with more focus."
"They came out and played like a team that wanted it more than we did today," ASU freshman Lauren Perry added. "We could have played a lot better."
TWU improved to 1-2-1 in conference play and to 4-6-2 overall.
Angelo State's five-game winning streak included wins over Wayland Baptist, St. Mary's, Midwestern State, Oklahoma Christian and Texas A&M-Commerce.
ASU returns home where they'll host the next four games at the ASU Soccer Field, starting with LSC games next weekend against West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico. ASU and WT will play at 4 p.m. on Friday before ASU hosts ENMU at 2 p.m. next Sunday.
