Ramblers Fall To Aggies, 5-0
Sept. 25, 2011
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Loyola women’s soccer team fell to 3-6-1 on the season after a 5-0 loss to No. 17 Texas A&M (8-4-0) this afternoon in College Station, Texas.
The beginning of the match featured choppy play with neither team able to establish sustained possession and make a move on offense. The ball was sent back-and-forth until the 10:46 minute mark when the Ramblers were the first to break out of the midfield and find repeated scoring opportunities. Loyola crashed the net with a shot from Tricia Stonebraker to the lower left corner of the net that was deflected by the Aggie keeper. Alex Brown picked up the deflection for a second block from the keeper that Ana Claudia Michelini launched high over the crossbar.
Beginning in the 35th minute, the Aggies exploded with six-minute dominant run in which they scored three goals. With 10:54 left in the first half, Allie Bailey found Lindsay Witz open at the top of the box. Witz sent a shot past the diving Rambler keeper to start the scoring streak.
Nora Skelton found space for a breakaway at 36:24 and took a shot that deflected off of a keeper challenge where it was mishandled by junior Chelsie Stokes and bounced towards the net to be credited as an own goal.
Freshman Annie Kunz scored when she spun around a defender in the box and launched a bullet into the upper left corner of the net to send the Aggies into intermission with a 3-0 lead over the Ramblers.
Texas A&M continued its momentum into the second half and found the scoreboard early. Nora Skelton notched her second goal of the game off of a corner kick from Merritt Mathias in the 49th minute. Mathias then found the back of the net at the 54:20 mark when a keeper challenge to Skelton resulted in a cross to the right post that found two Aggies unguarded for the easy put away.
Stonebraker led the Ramblers with three shots, two on goal. Brown added two shots on goal while Michelini finished with one shot on goal in addition to her early shot that soared over the net. Lauren Ostarello and Jessie Hubly each added one attempt to round out the team total of nine.
Monica Gonyo earned the start between the posts and collected three saves in the first half. Katie Groesch played relief in the second and collected five saves. Gonyo is credited with the loss to fall to 3-3-0 on the season.
Loyola will open its conference schedule against Valparaiso at home on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 7:00 p.m. CST.
