Ramblers Stump Sycamores, 2-0
Oct. 2, 2011
CHICAGO – The Loyola women’s soccer team, who has struggled in recent weeks, took to the pitch this afternoon ready to fight for a much-needed win. The fight paid off as the Ramblers defeated the Indiana State Sycamores, 2-0, to improve to 4-7-2 overall on the season.
Junior Ana Claudia Michelini tallied her third goal of the season to give Loyola the early lead. Michelini scored the game-winner at the 12:38 minute mark on a perfectly executed play. Jessie Hubly carried the ball up the field and set up the perfect cross into the box that was tapped aside by Tricia Stonebraker and put away off the foot of Michelini into the upper left corner of the goal.
Freshman Sammy Gage notched her first collegiate goal in the 81st minute to give the Ramblers the security of a 2-0 lead. Gage flew into the box and came through with a header into the net off of an assist from Maggie Olsen.
Monica Gonyo moved to 4-4-1 on the season as Loyola’s starting goalkeeper in the victory. She finished with four saves, adding a fifth shutout to the team’s record.
“Our girls have been working hard in practice and our results haven’t reflected their efforts so it was nice to get the win today,” said head coach Barry Bimbi. “Our strategy coming into the match was to get the ball wide to Jessie Hubly or Moriah Schwarz. We wanted them to play a key part in getting the ball forward into a dangerous area and start the attack.”
Four Ramblers paced the offense. Gage, Kristin Papierski, Alex Brown and Allison Rydberg each ended the match with two shots. Chelsie Stokes, Sally Tashjian, Samantha Welcher, and Maggie Olsen added one apiece to the team total of 13.
Loyola dominated to a 13-8 advantage in shots, 4-0 edge in corner kicks, and the 4-2 finish in saves. The Rambler defense also continued their strategic play to force Indiana State offsides four times in the match.
Up next, Loyola will stride back into conference action with a midweek contest on the road against Green Bay. The Ramblers will take on the Phoenix on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7:00 p.m. CST.
