Rampant Bison Run Past Western Illinois, 4-0
MACOMB, Ill. - Senior Danielle Boldenow scored two goals as the North Dakota State soccer won its fourth straight game Sunday, Oct. 9, defeating Western Illinois 4-0 in Macomb, Ill. The Bison improve to 11-2-1 overall and 4-0-0 in Summit League play.
This is the first year that NDSU has opened Summit League play 4-0 since joining the league in 2007.
Senior Michelle Gaffaney gave the Bison a 1-0 lead five minutes 57 seconds into the game, heading in an Abbey Moenkedick free kick. Gaffaney has now scored three goals this season while Moenkedick has tied her career high with seven assists this season.
Boldenow gave NDSU a 2-0 advantage just over a minute later after working a give-and-go with sophomore Brooklyn Dyce.
The Bison were relentless in the first half, notching 20 shots and forcing seven saves from Leathernecks keeper Victoria Kappel.
Boldenow scored her second goal of the game in the 62nd minute off an assist from Dyce. It was Boldenow's first career multi-goal game and Dyce's second assist of the afternoon.
Western Illinois went down to 10 players in the 72nd minute as Kristin Becker was sent off with a straight red card.
Senior Aubrey Bot notched her first goal of the season in the 85th minute, latching onto a loose ball from 25 yards out.
Senior keeper Kalani Bertsch made four saves and junior Kathy Kelsey made three as the Bison earned their eighth shutout of the season.
The Bison finished the game with a season-high 37 shots, while Western tallied 20.
NDSU now returns to Fargo for its final two home games of the season. The Bison will host IPFW Friday, Oct. 14 at 4 p.m. and Oakland for Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 16 at noon.
