Rangers Close Out Opening Weekend 2-0
Denver, Colorado: The Regis Rangers University women’s soccer team closed out the opening weekend with a 2-1 win over the Eastern New Mexico University Zias, the Rangers move to 2-0 on the season. RU dominated the scoring opportunities throughout the match, outshooting the Zias 23-5 with a 9-2 advantage of corner kicks.
Freshman forward Rikki Fix (Boise, Idaho) subbed into the game at the 27th minute mark and found the back of the net in the 33 minute. Fix connected on a rebound from a shot initially taken by junior forward Sid Otto (Highlands Ranch, Colorado).
With a one goal cushion and halftime approaching, the Zias tied the game in the 42nd minute of play. The score would remain tied 1-1 at the break.
As play resumed in the second half the Rangers saw a number of scoring changes go either high or wide of the goal mouth. In the 74th minute senior midfielder Kendal Kagawa (Honolulu, Hawaii) struck the crossbar from just outside the 18 yard box.
Junior forward Paulina Salazar (Escondido, California) scored the game-winner slotting a shot on the ground past a diving Zias goalkeeper into the lower right corner of the goal. Eastern New Mexico would have a couple of more dangerous opportunities but the Ranger defense held strong until the final whistle.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kat Crump (Huntsville, Alabama) played all 90 minutes of action while recording just one save. The Rangers are back in action on the road against Cal St. Dom. Hills on September 12 at 8:00 p.m.
