Razorbacks Make History With Shutout Win
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – No. 25 Arkansas continued its hot start to the season by defeating the defending Conference USA champions North Texas 1-0 at Razorback Field on Sunday night.
The victory not only lifted the Razorbacks to 7-1-0, but it also secured head coach Colby Hale’s place in Razorback Soccer history as the program’s winningest coach. In his fifth year at the helm, Hale surpassed coach Janet Rayfield (1993-1998) in overall wins with 46.
“Today was a good win. North Texas is a very good program and will win a lot of games,” Hale said. “Opening on the road in conference play and then turning around for a tough game on Sunday night isn’t easy. I thought our team handled it well.”
Arkansas’ run during the past eight matches have equaled the team’s 7-1-0 mark in 2013 and is tied for the second-best start in program history.
Junior defender Jessi Hartzler scored her second goal of the season, assisted by senior midfielder Claire Kelley’s corner kick during the 28th minute of play. Kelley’s assist was her fourth of the season and tied for the team lead. Senior goalkeeper Cameron Carter improved to 7-1 on the year while also notching her second shutout of the season.
Two-time C-USA Player of the Year (2013, 2015) Rachel Holden was held to zero shots on the game. The senior forward is the Mean Green's leading scorer this season and earned 12 goals in 2015. With the loss, North Texas falls to 5-2-1 on the year.
Arkansas dominated the stat sheet despite the tightly-contested match: The Razorbacks held a 23-3 edge in shots and a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Razorbacks will host their second top-five opponent of the season on Friday when No. 5-ranked Florida (5-1-0, 1-0-0) visits Razorback Field. The Gators were the Southeastern Conference Tournament champions in 2015 as well as the second-seeded team in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
The game will be streamed live on SEC Network+ via the WatchESPN app at 7 p.m. CST.
Single-game tickets are available for $5 and children 17 and under are admitted free. Season tickets are available for purchase through the Razorback Ticket Center at 800-982-HOGS (4647) or online at ArkansasRazorbacks.com. Each season ticket package will include a new 2016 Razorback Soccer scarf. Gates at Razorback Field open one hour prior to kickoff.
