Record-Setting Season Ends in Sweet Sixteen
Whitewater had the first scoring opportunity in the match, Alyssa Chamberlain at 7:53 from a very long distance that Wheaton's Kelsey Graham picked up. Anna Seabolt erased Wheaton's zero on the scoreboard with a shot straight out from the goal, assisted by Katelyn Kishkunas and Jaime Orewiler, at 18:56.
Orewiler made a bid for another Wheaton score with a header at 21:25, but Warhawk keeper Jordan Myers saved it. At 29:04 Orewiler got another chance, this time putting the ball in the net with assists from Val Lelle and Sarah Guidera. It was Orewiler's 13th goal of the season.
Whitewater and Wheaton defenders both blocked a shot before it could get to the goalies, keeping the score 2-0 in favor of Wheaton.
Seabolt scored again, her 12th of the year, at 37:19 off an assist from Keri Shannon to put the Thunder up 3-0.
Becky Plese got off a shot on goal at 42:18 for the Warhawks, but Graham made the save and Wheaton went into intermission with a 3-0 lead.
Ali Kopelman made it 4-0 from ten yards out at 54:26 with her fifth goal of the season, with Seabolt picking up another point with the assist.
UW-W's Jessica Allemang picked an opportune time for her first goal of the season, scoring at 56:56 with an assist from Emily Gerber, adding to her team season record for that category.
Although Whitewater was down 4-1, the Warhawks actually had more shots on goal than Wheaton the rest of the way. At 59:19 Katelyn Fritsch put the ball on net; at 74:14 Chamberlain had an attempt to the left of the goal blocked by a defender; Gerber had a shot that was saved by Hilary Barreto, in for Graham at goal, at 87:14; and Pamela Lisowe her attempt at 87:59 blocked by a defender.
Wheaton also tested Myers twice more in the second half but the UW-W keeper was up to the task.
Wheaton had seven shots on goal, Whitewater five. Whitewater had the edge in corner kicks, 7-6, and fouls were equal 6-6. Wheaton was whistled for three offsides, Whitewater one.
UW-Whitewater wraps up 2011 with a 14-5-3 record. The Warhawks won their second Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, and first outright, and were making the school's first appearance in the NCAA postseason tourney. The fourteen victories is the most in school history (previously 13 in 2000), and the .705 winning percentage is also the best ever (also in 2000 when it was .700).
Wheaton, 21-1-2 and making its fifteenth consecutive NCAA III appearance, is looking to add to its 20042006 and 2007 NCAA III championships. The Thunder will play the winner of Friday's other sectional semifinal, Washington University versus College of Saint Benedict, in the sectional final Saturday in Wheaton. Saturday's winner will join three other sectional winners for the final four, December 2-3 at Blossom Stadium n San Antonio, Texas.
