Red Foxes Draw Iona After Late Goal
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Marist women’s soccer team played Iona to a 1-1 draw Oct. 8. A goal by senior Marissa Mertens (Hicksville, N.Y.) in the final minute of regulation forced the fourth overtime game of the season for the Red Foxes.
Mertens chipped the ball over the Iona defense and into the net at the 89:06 mark for her second score of the season. Fewer than two minutes earlier, the Gaels (5-7-2, 1-2-2) had gotten on the board when freshman Charlotte Stuart fed sophomore Erika Flowers, who scored from 10 yards out on the left side.
A shot from sophomore Danielle Glazer (Queens, N.Y.) with two seconds remaining in the first overtime went wide, and Iona senior Melissa Fredericks hit the crossbar with a header at the same time in the second overtime.
Senior Andrea Wicks (East Northport, N.Y.) made three saves in the extra periods and totaled nine in the match. Senior Jamie Strumwasser (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) fired three shots and was one of three Red Foxes to play all 110 minutes of the game.
The Red Foxes (1-7-3, 0-2-3) will return to Tenney Stadium for a non-conference matchup against Brown at 4 p.m. Oct. 13. The contest will be streamed live on the Red Fox Network.
