Red Foxes Drop 5-1 Contest to Saint Joseph's
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's soccer team (4-2-1) suffered its first home loss of the season, falling to Saint Joseph's (4-1-2) by a score of 5-1 on Sept. 21 at Tenney Stadium.
Junior Christian Nieto (Clark, N.J.) fired the lone unassisted goal for Marist, which tied the score at 1, at the 28:17 mark. A penalty kick goal by Hawks senior Jake Nelson followed nearly two minutes later to begin the Saint Joseph's scoring run. Marist and Saint Joseph's totaled six shots apiece in the first half.
"We got a bunch of guys experience that hadn't had it before," head coach Matt Viggiano said. "The game was actually in our grasp when we tied it at one, but we just made a bad decision in the back and kind of started to spiral out of control from there."
Freshman Brendan Gallivan (Massapequa, N.Y.) and senior Matel Anasta (Catskill, N.Y.) each fired two shots for the Red Foxes in the loss. Five different players scored for the Hawks in the contest, with senior Mike Glazer hitting the back of the net on his first of three shots.
The Red Foxes will face New Hampshire at 7 p.m. Sept. 26. in their final non-conference match.
